Allison Dugdale spends six hours a solar day behind the wheel, so when the time came for a new car in 2014, she focused on comfort, efficiency and durability. Volkswagen ads that promoted "really make clean diesel fuel" spoke to her, and she bought a new VW Jetta.

Not long afterwards, Volkswagen's diesel fuel scandal came to low-cal, dealing a huge accident to the visitor and leaving car owners like Ms. Dugdale in the lurch.
